Water Heater Replacement details
A cold shower in a New York winter is not something you wait out. We troubleshoot tank and tankless water heaters, repair what can be repaired and tell you honestly when it cannot.
Quick answer: If the heater is relatively young and a single part failed, repair is usually worth it. Tank water heaters often last 8 to 12 years. If yours is near or past that range, has a leaking tank or needs repeated repairs, replacement often makes more sense. We give you both options honestly.
Most water heater problems come down to a short list of parts: heating elements and thermostats on electric units, thermocouples and controls on fuel fired units, anode rods, dip tubes, temperature and pressure relief valves, drain valves and expansion tanks. A lot of these are repairable, and fixing a single failed part on a heater with years of life left is usually the smart move. Fullerton Plumbing technicians carry common parts, test each component instead of guessing, and explain what failed in plain language.
We work on tank and tankless water heaters from the major brands, including Bradford White, Rheem, A. O. Smith and Navien. One customer wrote that our technician was on time, knowledgeable and fixed their water heater quickly at a fair price. Sometimes the honest answer is that the tank itself is leaking or the heater is near the end of its life, and putting money into it no longer makes sense. When that happens, we lay out repair and replacement side by side with an upfront quote for each.

When you call, we ask about the age, type and brand of your heater and what you are noticing. That helps the technician bring the most likely parts and tells us whether there is a safety issue to handle right away.
On site, we check power or ignition, thermostats, elements, the anode rod, relief valve and tank condition. On tankless units we read error codes and check flow, venting and scale. We find the cause rather than swapping parts.
We explain what failed and whether repair is worth it given the heater's age and condition. You get an upfront quote before work starts. If replacement makes more sense, we quote that too so you can compare.
We make the repair, refill and purge air from the lines, then confirm the heater reaches temperature and the relief valve seats properly. The area around the heater is left clean and dry.
Two things work against water heaters across much of New York. First, hard water. Western New York and the Finger Lakes sit on limestone, and the minerals in that water settle as sediment in the bottom of the tank. Sediment insulates the water from the burner or element, causes rumbling and popping, and shortens tank life. Second, winter. Incoming water in January can be close to freezing, so the heater runs longer and harder to deliver the same hot shower. Basements and utility rooms in older homes can also be cold and damp, which is hard on tanks and fittings.
When your hot water quits, call Fullerton at (518) 776-7838. We answer 24/7 from our Albany base and serve all of New York State, dispatching the nearest available technician. We will get you hot water again as fast as the problem allows, explain what failed, and give you an upfront quote before any repair. If your area has hard water, we can also talk through flushing schedules or a water softener to protect the next heater.
Water heater repair cost depends on which part failed, the type and brand of heater, and how accessible it is. Replacing a heating element, thermostat or relief valve is a different job than diagnosing a control board or descaling a tankless unit. Parts availability for older or less common models can matter. Tight closets or crawl spaces add time. If the tank itself is leaking, repair is usually not possible. We give you an upfront quote before any work starts.

Popping or rumbling usually means sediment has built up at the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under the sediment boils and pops as the heater fires. It is common in hard water areas. Flushing the tank often helps, though heavy, hardened sediment can mean the tank is aging.
That odor usually comes from bacteria reacting with the anode rod inside the tank, producing a sulfur smell. It is more common with well water. Replacing the anode rod with a different type and flushing the tank typically solves it. We can diagnose it on site.
Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the heater and turn off its power or set the control to off or vacation. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your utility, since that is not a plumbing call. Then call us 24/7.
